When my husband and I got married we knew blending our families would be a challenge and priority number one. His two daughters seemed to like me and my son at first but things became more difficult after the nuptials actually took place. I guess the reality of our union hit hard and we really did not have much of a honeymoon period within our blended family. The girls quickly became defensive and did not like or want to abide by the rules of our new home. Things grew worse before they got better. But the key here is that things did get better. With a lot of perseverance and firm love we made it.

I knew we were getting somewhere when the girls presented me with a gold pendant heart necklace for my birthday. We had planned a family dinner at a local restaurant. Together the girls made a public presentation of the gold pendant heart necklace. Each of them had written a brief set of words especially for me which they read in front of everyone. Then they handed me the beautiful cream colored jewelry box that held the gold pendant heart necklace. I opened it and tears continued to well in my eyes. The oldest girl stepped forward to put the gold pendant heart necklace around my neck. What a day!
